Run Time:
46M 59S
Brief:
This film documents for the first time ever-recorded the spirit possession testimonies and the sacred Khalikhane fire-walking ceremony in a Hindu village in the Kathmandu Valley. It addresses the challenge faced by individuals and families throughout the world in being able to fully grieve the traumatic loss of loved ones. The documentary captures the colorful rituals, music and dance of the Khalikhane fire-walking ceremony, which supports the liberation of the spirits of family members who died unnatural, often violent, deaths, and so are trapped as wandering spirits. These spirits cause illness and misfortune, as they seek to be released from their suffering earthly existence. A shaman calls these spirits to possess family members, and then describe the events of their death and, in a communal event, enter the fire-walking ceremony to be released to the divine ancestral realm. Family members impacted by these tragic deaths experience relief from everyday suffering and misfortune, process their grief, and support the spiritual progress of their loved ones’ souls. This documentary is a testament to the power of ritual and community to heal and process the suffering caused by the traumatic loss of family members.
